The Return of the Capital City Classic: FAMU vs FSU Back on the Court
By: Jordan Jackson
Tallahassee, FL — The long-awaited exhibition is finally returning after 34 years. FAMU and FSU will face off in a men’s basketball game on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Following the 1991 brawl, both schools decided to cease hosting the rivalry matchup, instead emphasizing unity across their athletic programs. Now, decades later, the game is back, this time with a focus on community and sportsmanship.
A joint press conference was held with the head coaches of both universities, Luke Loucks (FSU) and Charlie Ward (FAMU). They shared what this long-anticipated game means to them, not only as coaches but also as former student-athletes. Both mentioned that once they became head coaches, they wanted to revive this matchup to strengthen unity within the Tallahassee community.
Loucks reflected on his connection to FAMU players, saying he’s always wanted the opportunity to compete against them. Ward, who played in the first exhibition back in the day, expressed the emotions tied to the excitement.
“ I hope this game is something we can continue and eventually get on the regular-season non-conference schedule. It is a way to celebrate both our programs and the Tallahassee community,” said Loucks.
“There’s collaboration for the student-athlete, and I think Luke has the same heart in what we can do to help our student-athletes achieve their goals,” said Ward.
